International Dark Sky Park
a special honor
For those who love the natural night sky, it's like the Oscar for star enthusiasts: the award as International Dark Sky Park. It represents exceptionally dark, clear nights worldwide, the protection of the nocturnal environment, and places where true darkness can be experienced again. This title is held by the Nationalpark Eifel.
The award is granted by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) after a demanding, multi-year application process. Crucial are not only scientifically proven measurements of the darkness of the sky, but above all a holistic concept for reducing artificial lighting and light emissions. This includes environmental education, visitor management, and a consistent approach to artificial light.
A key criterion: The communities around the Nationalpark Eifel actively support the protection of darkness through star-friendly lighting, reduced light emissions, and conscious light planning. Because darkness can only be preserved together. The result is a night sky that has become rare in many places: with a clearly visible Milky Way, sparkling constellations, and an atmosphere that provides both peace and wonder.
