Historical Places

Experience the Middle Ages - Discover architectural culture.

In the Middle Ages, numerous castles were built in the Nordeifel region - primarily for border security. To this day, their towers, walls, and ruins shape the landscape. Some sites are now only preserved as impressive relics, while others provide a vivid picture of medieval architecture. If you want to actively explore history, you can follow the Water Castle Route by bike and discover castles and palaces of the region along the way. On foot, you can visit three well-known castles on the Castle Route.

Sacred architecture has also significantly influenced the Nordeifel region. The Middle Ages produced important church buildings, later followed by impressive monastery complexes in Baroque and Rococo styles such as in Steinfeld. Numerous chapels, wayside crosses, and smaller churches still complement the cultural heritage in the landscape today.

In many places, history is immediately palpable. Around monuments, historical streets, and squares, grown structures have been preserved which make up the special charm of the region. You can experience this especially impressively in the historical town centers of Bad Münstereifel, Blankenheim, Dahlem-Kronenburg, Mechernich-Kommern, Schleiden-Olef, and Hellenthal-Reifferscheid.

Some of these places are among the 59 "Historical City and Town Centers NRW" ensembles, which have grown over centuries and have preserved their architectural roots.

Our guides take you on a journey through time and show you details that you might easily overlook on your own.
