Along the Ahr, Rhine, and Erft
This cycle tour along three rivers could not be more varied.
Take a deep breath while you cycle along the Rhine and experience the hustle and bustle of the big cities, Cologne and Bonn. Numerous bridges and ferries make it easy to explore both sides of the river. While going downstream, you have a great view of the “Siebengebirge” before you reach the peaceful areas in the Ahr valley.
Caution! Detour Erft- Cycle Path
Due to construction, the Erft Cycle Path is redirected in the area of “Genfbachtal” between Nettersheim and Engelgau. The alternative route, which is marked as such, now leads along the opposite side of “Genfbach”. Ahr Cycle Path
Blankenheim
Starting point is the picturesque castle town of Blankenheim. The “Grafenburg Blankenheim” castle is enthroned above the town and is being used as a youth hos-tel. From here, you have a fantastic view over the historic town centre, where visitors can find the source of the Ahr in a half-timbered house, the old town gates, a late go-thic church and half timbered houses of monument value in romantic corners and al-leys. You have the onion for environmentally friendly arrival due to the cycle and hike train station in Blankenheim-Wald.
Ahr valley
The “Valley of Red Wine” is known for its wine festivals and taverns. Stroll through the medieval town centre of Ahrweiler or enjoy the spa atmosphere with a visit to the Ahr Thermal Bath in Bad Neuenahr. The “Tour de Ahrtal” is a cycle event day and it takes place every year at the beginning of summer.
Erft Cycle Path
Nettersheim
Only 10 kilometres from Blankenheim, along the Erft, you will reach the Eifel Nature Centre in Nettersheim. You have the option for an environmentally friendly arrival due to the cycle and hike train station in Nettersheim. The Eifel Nature Centre is a national centre for environmental education with exhibitions on nature and history of the region. This is also where you will find the tourist information centre. The source of the Erft is located in Nettersheim- Holzmülheim.
Along the Erft
By cycling along the Erft Cycle Path, you pass stoney witnesses of the Roman period, defensive town fortifications, mighty castles from the age of chivalry, and magnificent castles from the glory days of the Rhine nobility. You will witness a historical and at the same time moving industrial past, which has shaped the landscape. Gigantic mining areas show the present industrial period of the area.
On your last stretch from the Erft estuary on the way to Cologne you will be spoiled for choices: Continue to explore Roman times, or are you interested in art and culture? You have many options to chose from.
