The North Eifel also has a lot to offer with hikes for families with children. In addition to guided tours with national park rangers there is also the interesting possibility of taking less challenging walks on some of the Eifel Loops & Eifel Traces in the Eifel National Park.
Nearly all the trails are organised in themes so that there are entertaining diversions along the way during walks. You can choose a tour of suitable length for your family. Most of the trails are
"Romans, Milk and Moor stories"
You can learn all about the agriculture and dairy farming in the Eifel on the "Milk Trail", near Kall. Mechernich and Nettersheim allow you to submerge yourself especially well into the Roman era. In addition exciting stories about geology are told in Net-tersheim. There is the very special Fossil Field along the way.The interactive "Wild Way" in the "Kermeter"- the centre piece of the Eifel National Park- leads though native red beech mixed forests.The Moor path near Dahlem leads to heathland moor areas with numerous expanses of peat moss.
Giants, Knights and chattering Birds
On a circular trail around the "Kakushöhle" (Cacus caves) near Mechernich you can follow in the footsteps of the giant "Kaku". You can admire the Satzvey Castle, a medi-eval moated castle renowned for its knights’ jousting tournaments. The kingfisher is the star of a hike near Hellenthal. Water is the central theme on the Kronenburg Lake and the Oleftalsperre (Olef Valley Dam) circular trails.
