Ahr Cycle Trail
On former Ahrtalbahn railway lines, straight through the smallest and one of the noblest wine-making areas of Germany, the trail leads you from the Ahr source in the peaceful castle town of Blankenheim to the only river mouth under nature preservation, near Sinzig on the Rhine. Light uphill and relaxing downhill slopes are there to tempt you, as do wine-making villages, historical Ahrweiler.
An environmentally friendly arrival is possible with the Deutsche Bahn to the Blankenheim-Wald cycle and hike train station.
The “Tour de Ahrtal” is a cycle event day and it takes place every year at the beginning of summer.
Beautiful sights left and right along the way
Castle Blankenheim
Starting point is the picturesque castle town of Blankenheim. The “Grafenburg Blankenheim” castle is enthroned above the town and is being used as a youth hostel. From here, you have a fantastic view over the historic town centre, where visitors can find the source of the Ahr in a half-timbered house, the old town gates, a late gothic church and half timbered houses of monument value in romantic corners and alleys.
Eifelmuseum and Romans-Infocenter
Two of these quaint houses are home to the Blankenheim Eifel museum and the Documentation Center of the Roman Road Adventure Region. The historic carnival museum in Georgsgtor explains the impressive 400-year old Blankenheim carnival traditions in particular the Blankenheim Ghost Parade. Another cultural and historical highlight is the “Blankenheim Zoo Tunnel”- the medieval water supply to the castle, which is a unique technical monument of European importance.
Wine & wellness
The Ahr Cycle Trail leads through fascinating natural landscapes, past picturesque towns and quaint villages. Easy climbs and relaxing descents are tempting. Mayschoß,Rech and Dernau with vineyards and taverns are on the way, as well as the historic Ahrweiler, the "wellness metropolis" Bad Neuenahr and finally the mouth of the Ahr near Sinzig.
Important note: From Fuchshofen to Schuld, the Ahr Cycle Trail runs along a road for about five kilometers. Here caution is absolutely necessary, since particularly on weekends there is an increased traffic volume by cars and motorcycles!
By combining the Ahr Cycle Path with the Erft Cycle Pathand the Rhine Cycle Path you can create a 300 km long Cycle tour called Three-River-Tour.
The RadBus Ahr-Voreifel runs between Altenahr and Rheinbach and connects the Ahr valley directly with the Cologne bay. That way you have the possibility to connect the Ahr Cycle Trail with the Moated Castles-Route, the Rheinische Apfelroute or the Erft-Cycle Path. You can find more information about line 844 here.
