Wild daffodils
A yellow sea of flowers
A unique natural spectacle occurs in the region during flowering season from mid-April to early-May every year. Millions of wild daffodils turn the upper Olef valley near Hellenthal-Holerath into a widely spread flower carpet. The North Eifel e.V. Nature Park offers guided hikes to the daffodil plains during flowering season. The annual daffodil festival location alternates between Hellenthal-Hollerath and Monschau and takes place mid-April.
The return of the wild daffodils
The wild yellow daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarzissus) is the principal form know from parks and gardens. It grows in regions with high precipitation in western Europe. In Germany, they are mainly found in the Eifel. After the spruce plantations had been removed in the area, wild daffodils could unfold again with the support of the initiative of the NRW Stiftung and the North Eifel Nature park.
